where will you display it?
Where you plan on displaying your portrait, has a lot to do with how you design your session. For instance, if you were going to hang the image in a very formal room, a formal setting and clothing may be more appropriate. The same is true if the walls and decor are very dark, you would probably not want to hang a high-key (all white) portrait in that space.
Where you display your portrait, also has a lot to do with the appropriate size it should be. The size is primarily determined by the size of the image in relation to the size of the space where it will be displayed. The three things to consider are: impact, distance and surrounding wall space.
Obviously, if you want to create impact in a room, the image must be large enough to command attention and get noticed. This sometimes is a factor of whether you choose a close-up or a full lenght pose. Impact also can be created just by selecting a black & white image---which is much different than we see in everyday life.
Distance has to do with how far away you will be viewing the image. To enjoy the image, you must be able to see the people and the expressions.
